Where Can You Develop Your Film in 2024 (in both Canada and the USA)?

We see this at Transfer to Digital all the time: Clients come in with film to digitize, only to find out that some of it was never developed. Film development (or processing) is the chemical procedure by which film that has been exposed to light is converted into a negative or positive image. This process transforms the latent image into a visible image, makes this permanent and renders it insensitive to light.

From 35mm still photography film in it’s original roll, to 8mm movies in it’s original 16mm format in a metal case, to exposed Super8 film in its cartridge, we’ve seen it all. Unfortunately, film can only be digitized after it’s been developed/processed and we do not offer this service at Transfer to Digital.

Businesses that develop/process film are certainly rare as demand for this service is limited since most film, especially motion picture film, was processed soon after it was exposed, decades ago. Fortunately, some businesses offering this service still exist and we’ve found a few options for our clients. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or a vintage film aficionado, we hope you find these businesses helpful in taking the first step in breathing life into your memories captured on film.

Keep in mind that developing/processing your film is just the first step. All of the businesses listed below can also scan your film (like we do at Transfer to Digital) after they’ve processed it. And for still photography film, many offer prints of those images if you so desire.

We’re based in Canada ourselves, so we list fellow Canadian business options first, with American options afterwards (all accept mailed in film) Please note, the first lists are for still photography film, which have far more options. For your 8mm, Super8, and 16mm motion picture film development needs, look to the last 2 lists (Canada and USA).
